Jennifer Perryman, possessive of a beautifully soulful, resonant voice, the kind that pulls a listener in with each subsequent syllable, is a likely match for celebrated pianist Keith Javors, who’s warm tone and emotional ballad playing have been well-recognized in the jazz world. Such a likely match, in fact, that the two would first work together some 25 years ago as eager freshmen in the prestigious University of North Texas Jazz Studies Program.
There’s certainly no trouble these days for either of them as The Ballads EP reflects the experience and wisdom that comes with age along with a revival of vigor to live life to the fullest. From the uplifting major tonality of Today to the empowering A Phoenix Rising, depicting the self-discovery of a soul coming up from the ashes to rebirth, Perryman and Javors combine to present a duo work which can be admired for its sheer beauty while inspiring our choices along the road. Such positive genuineness may be a rarity in Pop music, but for the listener craving a different perspective and an opportunity to be moved and grow, they offer just that chance.
