Known for his sound and emotional conviction, alto saxophonist Dane Bays is one of very few individuals mentored by legendary alto saxophonist Larry Smith. At age 16, Bays was the first high school admit to the Manhattan School of Music and was granted full scholorships to jazz programs across the country. His three year association with tenor saxophonist Ron Bridgewater culminated in a work including a public radiobroadcast with Bridgewater and renowned organist Jack McDuff. Bays has performed frequently throughout New York, Detroit, and Chicago, including several appearances with venerable tenor saxophonist Von Freeman. He is the co-founder of the American Music Project and is active in both the jazz and hip-hip veins.
